Chapter 13

Grace

He pulls the car into a private car park and stops. “Where are we?” I ask, looking around for some sort of clue.

“Coney Island,” he says, jumping out of the car and rushing around to my door.

“Why are we here? You own umpteen theme parks, and this isn’t one of them.”

“I know, but I love this place. It has a certain something.”

“I believe you, but this seems a little weird. Are you checking out the competition on our date?” I ask, starting to feel a little duped.

“Hardly, but they do have a ride that I want to try out.”

“Okay, as long as it’s not a roller coaster that’s going to make me scream my lungs out,” I reply as he takes my hand as he did in Chicago and leads me through the gates. And then I see it. I know which ride he’s talking about, and there is no way on this living earth he’ll get me on that.

I try to ignore the huge monstrosity, but as we get closer and closer, I realise ignoring it isn’t going to work.

“Why are we walking towards the Big Wheel?” I ask, pulling on his hand, trying to slow him down.

“Because that’s the ride I want us to try.”

“Y-you must have been on this b-before. I don’t need to go with you,” I stutter as I look up into the night sky. I can see the cars swinging in the breeze coming off the ocean.

“I have, but never with a beautiful woman.”

“Oh, well, maybe someone else can go up with you. I really don’t want to.”

“Gee . . . you do, and you will. Fear is a good thing. It’s a reminder that you’re alive.”

“For now.” I huff. “What if the wind gets up, or we get stuck?”

“It won’t. I wouldn’t put you in any danger.”

“I’ve seen the films . . . That one where Eddie Murphy was hanging from the car when the cable snapped.”

“You’re comparing a ride to a movie stunt? I promise you’ll love it. Trust me.”

Those two words . . . Trust me. Freddie used to say those exact words when he was wanting to go out with the boys. When he promised it would never happen again. Those two words send shivers down my spine to the point where my legs are shaking.

“Does this scare you that much?” he asks, noticing my meltdown.

“It scares me, but this”—I motion to my shaking legs—“isn’t because of that. I don’t trust easily, and we haven’t had the best start. If I trust you, and I freak out, will you promise to make them stop the ride and let me off?”

“Of course I will. It only goes around three times. If you’re screaming after round one, I’ll make sure it stops.” He smiles, and I can see that he’s being honest. Braxton wouldn’t intentionally hurt me . . . I don’t think he would.

After a quick debate between my head and my heart, I step up onto the platform. Braxton climbs into the car first but never lets go of my hand.
